Our view of God affects our view of people and suffering in the world. Many folks say, "How can a loving God allow so much suffering in the world? If there is suffering, there must not be a God." But God's plans and purposes include: ...good news for the afflicted ...healing for the brokenhearted ...liberty for the captives ...sight for the blind ...comfort and gladness for the mourning ...favor for the rejected ...beauty for those in the ash heap ...strength to show His beauty in places of barrenness ...honorable work of restoration to that which is ruined and devastated (Isaiah 60:1-4) God is the God of justice. Just because the timetable of His justice differs from ours, does not mean He is disinterested or not involved. Those who fixate on Fortune and Destiny will be sadly mistaken. (Isaiah 65:11) Delighting in and following selfish ways bring consequences that the participants would rather blame God than take responsibility for their actions that lead to the suffering of others. Want to right the wrongs in the world? Then clothe yourself with God's righteousness, aligning your heart and mind to His truth. He will direct you to the people and places that are ready and prepared to receive His healing and comfort and liberty. And the Creator of these precious people will show Himself beautiful as He rights the wrongs of suffering... ...through His people ...in His time ...according to His ways Lord, give me a bigger picture of You - the saving, redeeming, mighty God. Give me a burden in my sphere of influence for the brokenhearted, afflicted, rejected ones that You have prepared to receive Your healing, encouragement and favor. May You receive all the glory; may others know You, the Beautiful God. Amen. A special "thank you" to my friend, Colleen G., who took the time to write out her thoughts and prayer about suffering in our lives. In UNSTOPPABLE, a brand-new documentary, Kirk takes you on a personal and inspiring journey to better understand the biggest doubt-raiser in faith: "Why?" Kirk goes back to the beginning — literally — as he investigates the origins of good and evil and how they impact our lives ... and our eternities. Reminding us that there is great hope, UNSTOPPABLE creatively asks — and answers — the age-old question: "Where is God in the midst of tragedy and suffering?" Over 270,000 people packed sold-out theaters to see UNSTOPPABLE when it opened the night of September 24, 2013. It was the number 1 movie ticket sold on movietickets.com. My family's view of Unstoppable? It was gritty, emotional, dark at times; it was violent and graphic at times. It isn't the usual "Don't Worry - Be Happy" kind of film; this is a documentary. Did it answer the question: "Where is God in the midst of tragedy and suffering?" Yes, we believe that it did. I think you will, too. *NOTE: I would encourage parents with children younger than 13 to preview this movie first to determine if their own children are mature enough to watch this DVD due to the violence, blood, and graphic scenes depicting true biblical events.

These two words, in my mind, don't go together. My Christmases throughout my childhood and adult years have been times of peace, not conflict. Did you know that Christians are now seeing conflicts surrounding Christmas? ...employees refusing to say "Merry Christmas" but instead, "Happy Holidays" ...the forced removal of Nativity scenes in public and some private places ...writing X-mas instead of "Christmas" ...claiming that the Christmas holiday was originally pagan and that we shouldn't celebrate it The War on Christmas: Battles in Faith, Tradition, and Religious Expression is a book designed to confront the arguments and conflict surrounding Christmas. At first, my thought was, "Here we go, another book on all of the reasons why Christians shouldn't have a Christmas tree, hang stockings, etc., etc., etc." Well, I was wrong. This is an excellent book, one that my family is reading through in our evening Bible devotional times together. My husband is enjoying this book so much, that he is also teaching about the misconceptions and conflicts surrounding Christmas in our adult small group class on Sunday mornings about church, using this book as one of the helpful resources in his studies. For now, though, I want to leave you with a bit from Chapter 14 from The War on Christmas: Battles in Faith, Tradition, and Religious Expression: What is the significance of the name "Jesus"? "Jesus", the name, comes from the roots of the Hebrew language and means "Jehovah is salvation," and "God our Savior". Wow. What a powerful name! Did you know that the male name, "Joshua", is also a form of the word "Jesus"? Chapter 14 of The War on Christmas pinpoints various Scripture verses from both the Old and the New Testament and shows why the genealogies of Jesus' family history are actually listed in the Bible. There are important elements we can learn from reading through and studying these genealogies! Every part of the Bible is inspired by God and has an important purpose. You'll get a glimpse of the many prophecies surrounding the Messiah and why Jesus is the only God-man who has ever fulfilled all of those prophecies. This video, below, shows some of the misconceptions Americans have about the birth of Christ. I found this interesting! Jesus...Name above all names, Beautiful Savior, Glorious Lord... ...Emmanuel, God With Us, Blessed Redeemer, Living Word. Those are all some amazing names of God. If you have junior high or high school youth in your home, this book could be an excellent choice to explore together as a family. Whether you are excited about celebrating Christmas, or you feel it is a sin to celebrate Christmas, I think you will appreciate much of the material in this new book. We have! You may find that it's easier for each person to have their own copy to read and follow along as everyone takes turns reading from the book. This particular book, we've found, is easier to read in a quiet moment than to listen to it being read from in a small group. It's also great for creating discussion that leads to growth! We are learning some new things about the Scriptures, and that's always great! I received a copy of The War on Christmas for review purposes, but was not compensated financially in any way. The opinions expressed are my own and are based solely on my experiences while watching this movie. For some of you, this may not apply...but since my family and I are followers of Jesus Christ, we have tried to make a thoughtful effort every December to bring more of Christ into our Christmas and less of the self-centered "give me, give me!" type of attitude. We've downplayed Santa and other secular versions of Christmas that can take over the true meaning of Christmas. If you enjoy the rhythm of the poem, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moor, then I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised at the similar rhythm of this new illustrated book, The First Christmas Night! (Email subscribers may want to click back to the original post in order to most easily view the photos and enter the giveaway contest.) About The First Christmas Night The First Christmas Night is a beautiful retelling of the birth of Jesus on that joyous night in Bethlehem so long ago. The poem begins with the arrival of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem and winds though Christ’s birth, the angels’ appearance to the shepherds, and the visit by the Wise Men. The simple, yet elegant, verses will appeal to little ones and are accompanied by the rich acrylic illustrations of Christine Kornacki. Here's a sample of the poetry found between the covers of The First Christmas Night: ’Twas the very first Christmas when all through the town not a creature was stirring—there was not a sound. The moon shining bright in the heavens so high gave the look of midday to the Bethlehem sky. The animals were nestled in warm, cozy places with looks of contentment on each of their faces. |
Keith Christopher is an award-winning composer, arranger, lyricist, and author, and his musical talent is evident in the lyrical verses of The First Christmas Night. In addition to writing and producing, Keith is on the faculty at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He lives in Hendersonville, Tennessee, with his wife and two children. |
About the illustrator:
At a very early age, Christine Kornacki developed a love for painting and bringing stories to life. After receiving a BFA in illustration from the University of Hartford, her dreams of illustrating children's books began to take shape, including illustrating the best-selling The Sparkle Box for Ideal's Children's Books. Christine's recent work also includes illustrating the six-book series for the American Girl historical doll characters Marie-Grace and Cecile. She spends her days painting in her studio, which adjoins a charming cafe in New Haven, Connecticut. |

Glamour: the attractive or exciting quality that makes certain people or things seem appealing or special.
Teen band. Lots of glitz and lots of glamour. And probably lots of hairspray. ☺
So why would I be sharing with you about a new Christian girls' band for tweens and teens?
Because when the new 1 Girl Nation CD arrived in the mail, and I put it into the CD player, I loved it, and so did my daughters!
I'm a 40-something mama, and while I don't love standing up at rock concerts for three hours straight, I still love music of all kinds. Okay, most kinds. Maybe not punk rock or acid rock, or opera in foreign languages. ☺
What's most important to me are the words to the songs...the message that those words hold for me and my teen daughters.
1 Girl Nation helps satisfy the desire of many Christian teens who want to listen to "cool-sounding" music, but don't want to be blasted by the Lord's name being used in vain, or having to go on Prozac because the words to the songs are too depressing.
Here are a couple of videos so you can listen to 1 Girl Nation for yourself!
1GN, as they’ve already been dubbed, stars Carmen, Kayli, Kelsey, Lauryn Taylor and Lindsey, five girls with a passion for telling their fans about Christ through their music. Their first single, “While We’re Young,” can be heard on radio stations across the country, and their self-titled debut album is now available.

I love reading Christian fiction, so I try my best to provide you with a number of books each month written by Christian authors - with biblical worldviews.
Why?
It's all about what we are exposing our minds to. (Yes, I know we shouldn't end sentences with a preposition. Please don't nag me.)
Reading a continuous stream of secular books that often impose anti-biblical values on the reader can end up doing damage to our souls.
Today, I'd like to let you know about a new book written by the mother/daughter team, Joyce and Alexandra Swann: The Force.
Before I began reading The Force, I first read through the Swanns' first science fiction book in this series: The Fourth Kingdom. Once I had finished that, I was ready for The Force. Can this new book be read as a stand-alone? Sure. But you will definitely understand more of what's going on if you're able to read The Fourth Kingdom first.
About the book:
When Jarrod and Joshua Sinclair are called in to consult with the FBI about the Hollywood Starlet murders, they immediately suspect their old nemesis, Josef Helmick, of creating clones of famous women for a visiting Saudi prince. Wasting no time, they hire retired detective Fred Kowalski and send him to Dubai to uncover Josef’s base of operations and build a case against him for the murders.
But Fred soon discovers that Helmick Enterprises is harboring a secret much darker than human trafficking. Fred must stop Helmick before he resurrects an ancient, diabolical Force in order to bring the entire human race under his control.
My review of The Force:
So...how was book 2 in this series? Well, from page 1 of The Force, I could tell that the authors had worked very hard to remedy some of those problems.
Even if they hadn't, I would have hardly been able to put down this book. The Force is a powerfully written book encompassing so many of the questions in the scientific community about cloning. It was action-packed, flowed well, and contained only a couple of monologues that were much shorter than those in book 1. There were a few basic editing problems (grammar, punctuation, spelling), but overall The Force was much better written than The Fourth Kingdom. If you enjoy science ficiton, you'll love The Force!
About the authors:
Joyce and Alexandra have co-authored two other novels, The Fourth Kingdom, and The Twelfth Juror, both of which were published in 2010.
Joyce’s personal story of her experiences raising and educating her family is chronicled in Looking Backward: My Twenty-Five Years as a Homeschooling Mother, published in February of 2011.
Her novel, The Warrior, which tells the story of one woman’s ten-year prayer vigil for a man she has never met, was released in May of 2012. She is also the author of two children’s books, Tales of Pig Isle and The McAloons, which began as stories that she told to entertain her grandchildren.
Alexandra is author of No Regrets: How Homeschooling Earned me a Master’s Degree at Age Sixteen and Writing for Today. She has been self-employed for over fourteen years and was the 2011 Chairwoman of the Board of the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. She writes a regular blog, Paying for Protection, about the consequences of over-regulation and over-reaching government. Her novel, The Planner, which is the prequel to The Chosen, was published in June of 2012.

Willow is so excited that the Over-the-Top Circus has finally come to town!
The only problem is, that when left to her own devices, she can’t say “no” to some good things.
On the way to the show, she is distracted by enticing treats and fun that she just can’t turn down. Willow arrives late and is sad to find that not only has she has run out of time, but money, and she won’t be able to enjoy the pink cotton candy she’s been dreaming of.
Willow is given valuable advice and a second chance and is ultimately taught the lesson that sometimes in life you have to say “no” to good things to end up with something great!

Over my lifetime, I've read a few books along similar themes in this new book: Alone Yet Not Alone.
Because it was a shorter read than some of the books I receive for reviews and giveaways, and it was geared toward upper elementary and middle school ages, I decided to let my 13-year-old, Brittany, read and review the book for us!
Book Reviews by Brittany:
"The Leininger family settled deep within America's new frontier, in the Blue Mountains of Pennsylvania. They were celebrating their blessings, their faith, and a bountiful harvest when their family was torn apart by the Penn's Creek Massacre. When Barbara and Regina are carried away and separated by Allegheny warriors, both sisters rely on their faith in God's truth, even in their darkest hour."
This book was very inspirational, and since it was based on a true story, that made it even more interesting. Seeing how the Indian tribes worked, and how the American girls had to adapt to the Indian lifestyle, was well written. I could almost feel how they felt in those hard times.
I really loved how God was a part of the girls' lives, even in the hard times they were going through. Barbara (the older sister), and Regina (the younger sister) had a very close relationship that was hard to break, and even though they were separated from their families, they still trusted in God for everything they did.
All in all, this is a good, quick read that I would recommend for all ages!
Thanks, Brittany, for helping out and writing the book review for us all to read.
Alone Yet Not Alone was inspired by Deuteronomy 31:6, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you.” (NIV)
What verse reminds you that God is with you and is always in control?

I will be verifying the winning entrant's giveaway entry options to make sure they are valid. In the past several months, multiple potential winners were excluded from winning even though their names had been selected randomly as winners, because they said that they had signed up for email subscriptions but had not completed the process, which includes clicking on an email you will receive to confirm your subscription. An email subscription to Joy In Our Journey.com is not a requirement to enter our giveaways, but if you do use an email subscription option to enter to win, please make sure that you click on the confirmation email that you will receive. That will validate your entry. Thank you! :)
In the interest of full disclosure, some of the links in my posts are “affiliate links.” This means if you click on the link and purchase the item, I receive an affiliate commission. I only recommend products I use personally. Your purchases through these links help support Joy In Our Journey. I humbly thank you for your support!
