Keepers At Home
Contentment and the "I'm BORED" phrases . . .
I decided long ago that phrases like "It's BORING!" or "I'm BORED!" would be a no-no in our family. My children learned very quickly that if I overheard them say, "I'm bored," or "This is boring," I would quickly assign them a household chore that they wouldn't normally do.
It's amazing that it only took them each a couple of times of repeating those horrid phrases...that I never heard them again!
I have since discovered that lots of moms and dads have this same rule in their home.
If my children had asked me when they were younger, I couldn't have told them exactly WHY they shouldn't say these phrases. But now I know. And if you'd like to share this as a devotional with the girls in your club, please feel free to do so.
I made an acrostic with the word, "BORING."
I printed out the cards below, on cardstock, and then showed them to the girls after talking about what kind of words and body language people generally show or say to others when they are bored with something.
I specifically told the girls that just because "G" stands for "Godless", it doesn't mean that they, as a person, are without God (the definition of "godless). It simply means that their attitude when acting or feeling bored is not full of God's love and respect. It is a godless attitude.
After discussing each negative trait making up the attitude of boredom, I presented different, short examples of how people act when they are bored. I had the girls divide into six lines (for B.O.R.I.N.G.), and the first person in the line held the word card I had made for that particular letter in the acrostic, "BORING."
As I read each example of how people show boredom (for example, rolling our eyes or sighing deeply when asked by parents to do something), each line of girls took turns calling out their particular word in the acrostic.
Basically, what the girls heard over and over again during this activity was that when we display an attitude of being bored, we are acting:
*Bratty
*Obstinate (we discussed how this is the fancy way of saying "stubborn")
*Rude
*Inconsiderate
*Naughty
*godless
...not to mention, acting ungrateful for the many things God has blessed us with! I pray that this will be useful in your families and in your clubs. There are quite a few pages down this page, so please scroll all the way down.
