SpellQuizzer software review
There have only been a couple of spelling programs that have impressed me over the years, and this is one of them.
While it's not a spelling program, in and of itself, SpellQuizzer (not an affiliate link) will help many children begin to perfom well on their spelling tests, whether homeschooled or in the school system.
And for students preparing for school, city, county, state, or national spelling bees, SpellQuizzer is invaluable!
I haven't seen anything like it on the market, anywhere else. Sure, there are other spelling websites out there, but they all only allow word lists containing words that are commonly used. So, if your children are in a spelling bee, and most of the words on the lists are rated genius, those spelling websites won't really work for you because the words you want to enter aren't recognized by their lists.
SpellQuizzer is quite simple. From the picture up above, you can see a simple main menu that allows you to enter a new list of words, get quizzed on an already entered list, or edit a list. You can also export or import spelling lists to and from the SpellQuizzer website.

So, here's what our family does. The girls receive their new spelling lists on Mondays, typically, by dictation from me. This makes them have to really think and analyze every sound in the word. On Tuesdays, they will enter their lists into SpellQuizzer by using a microphone headset. They use the "tab" key to quickly move through the menu as they are entering their words. Our spelling program (Spell to Write and Read) also contains sentences for each word, so they will also enter the word used in a sentence, although it's easy (and fun!) to make up sentences to make the program a bit more fun.
If a family absolutely cannot afford a microphone, the parent or child can type in a key phrase or question where the answer will be the correct spelling word. This even enables deaf students to be able to use the software.
On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the girls will practice their words by either wearing a headset (so we can work in the same room) or not. They hear the words on their list being spoken by themselves (how cool is that?!!!), and then type in the correct spelling.
On Fridays, they can even take their test using their software, although they are required to show me their grade they received.
While SpellQuizzer isn't a super flashy program, it gets the job done - and it does the job well! My girls haven't had any complaints about SpellQuizzer, and neither have I.
And the #1 benefit of SpellQuizzer is that when our girls are studying a 500-word list for the county spelling bees, I don't have to spend many hours of my own time quizzing them on their words. They are able to effectively quiz themselves! Hooray!
My oldest, Kelsi, has been able to come in 2nd place in two county spelling bees, and 6th place in one of the county bees over the last three years. While I do credit their spelling curriculum for giving them many tools to help out with spelling, I credit SpellQuizzer for making the regular practice of the words a possibility without driving Mom and Dad crazy!
You may look at some demonstration videos on the SpellQuizzer website, if you are interested.
