I know, I know, I'm probably going to get some hate mail over that statement, but it's true. Dogs can be very sweet...but. Cats can be left inside the house for a week while we're on vacation. Cats generally don't have body odor. Cats bury their treasures so we don't step onto them in the backyard. Cats don't bark at every human or animal that walks past our home. The other day, though, I was very thankful that we had volunteered to dogsit two sweet schnauzer girls for some friends of ours. In fact, when a stranger knocked on my screen door the other morning and commented about how the dogs are excellent watch dogs, I didn't tell him that we are only dogsitting for a few days. I figured he didn't need to know that they would be going back home at the end of the weekend. We occasionally have strangers come to our front door and ask if they could please come in and use our phone. I never let strangers come into our home like that, so don't worry, I didn't let him in. This time, though, the man at the door was dressed fairly well but spoke like a snake. He was too smooth, too slick. His spiel about how he was trying to find a friend's house but didn't know the address and needed to use a phone to call his friend to get directions was too rehearsed, and the smile that went along with it was not sincere. The backpack he was carrying may have indicated that he has hopped from town to town as a wanderer. I don't know. I was thankful that we had installed a separate lock onto our screen door many years ago, so this man couldn't easily force his way into our home. I don't often call 9-1-1, but there have been a few times that I have found the need since we moved into our neighborhood. This was one of those times. After the man realized that I wasn't going to let him into my home, he asked if I thought there were any neighbors who would consider allowing him to use their phone. I told him "no." Unfortunately, after he left my house with a smug smile on his face, he walked down to the apartment complex across the street. From knowing someone who has lived in those apartments, I knew that none of the front doors contained screen doors, and many of the apartments are filled with single moms and children. That made me nervous for those families down the street. So, off to the phone I went. I called 911, knowing that at 9:30 in the morning on a weekday, the police wouldn't be very busy yet, at least not in our little town. Within a few minutes, I noticed a police car parked at the top of the apartment complex. A few minutes later, the two police officers escorted the wandering stranger back onto the street and seemed to be pointing to where he could find the nearest pay phone...or something. I don't really know what they were discussing, but I saw some pointing going on in several directions. He wasn't arrested by the police, and the officers watched him for a minute to see that he was walking down the street, away from the apartment complex and my home. At first, I felt a little bit embarrassed that I had called 911. After all, he wasn't arrested, and apparently the officers hadn't needed to be rough with him. The stranger was cooperative. But something still hadn't been quite right. I could feel it in my gut. In the end, I was glad that I had felt led to call 911 and request officers to check out the situation. That way, they knew he was in town, in case there were problems that happened later in the day or in the days to come. At least the police would have a reference point to where he had been earlier in the day. Like I mentioned earlier, several times a year we have people ask if they can come into our home to use our telephone. I always say "no." I've offered to call someone for them, but with me inside the house and them outside, and they've all turned me down, so I know that their requests to use our phone are not legitimate. But this time, while this stranger gave me the creeps, I was very thankful to have Sophie and Sadie express their displeasure that he had come to the door. And I was thankful that this time, we had a dog. Oops - two dogs. That don't belong to us, but treated our family well on a day that started with a stranger asking to come inside our home. How do you protect your home from strangers who may wish to do harm to you or your family members? Do you have a dog for this purpose? Okay, I'll admit it. I'm not really a hard rocker. Didn't really care for hard rock, acid rock, or screaming rock music when I was in high school. When I attended a small, private Christian college for four years, not much changed in the music department for me. I like most kinds of music, but I wasn't really into the screaming kinds of Christian rock back then. And I'm still not. So why would I choose to do a review on a hard rock Christian band? If I'm truthful, I guess I'd have to admit to you that I was just plain curious. What would this music be like? Would my 11- and 13-year-old daughters like it? The CD arrived in the mail, and the information I received said that These Hearts have a sound that is very similar to Hawthorne Heights, Taking Back Sunday, A Day to Remember, Chiodos, and Underoath. I've never heard of these bands. So much for keeping up with what's cool in the Christian music world! I put in the CD after lunch that afternoon. I couldn't wait - I was too curious! Well, it was loud, and different than what I'm used to listening to. My dad would call it "noise" instead of "music." We actually listened to the entire CD. It would have been nice to have had a lyrics sheet to view while listening, because there were many parts where I literally couldn't understand the words due to the screaming that was going on. But much to my parents' disappointment, I'm sure, I'd have to say that I didn't really mind the song that you'll see below in the YouTube video. I'm not really into the screaming portions, but the tune was catchy, and I didn't mind that. If you are curious, like me, you'll have to listen, below, to this song on the video. It wasn't filled with "noise" as much as I thought it would be. Sorry, Dad. I know I'm a disappointment to you! :) After listening to the entire CD, though, there had been so much screaming that I felt like the music didn't actually come through many of the songs. And to be truthful, it almost made my throat hurt and feel scratchy because I was sympathetic toward whoever was doing all that screaming on the CD! I finally suggested to my girls that maybe they recorded some of the screaming and just repeated a recording of it when wanted. I can't imagine someone screaming that much in a recording studio and not needing a throat transplant afterward! I asked the girls what they thought about it, and they weren't overly impressed. They're not used to that kind of music, and sometimes they don't even like some of my old Petra CDs because the rock is "too hard" for them. That's okay. You can check out These Hearts' Facebook page, and learn more about them here. While I don't know that I would go out and buy copies of this CD for my daughters' friends for their birthdays, I'd say that if you enjoy hard rock and would like to listen to Christian hard rock, this would probably be right up your alley. For now, though, my family will stick to some milder forms of Christian pop and rock...and Beethoven and Bach and the Transformers movie themes. Those seem to be far more popular around our home these days! What do you do when your life is not all it's cracked up to be? Get a new one. It's spring break of her senior year and Madison Van Buren is fed up. Stressed over decisions on colleges, her parents' bickering, and pressures from her boyfriend, Madison gets in her car and just drives away. Meanwhile, seventeen-year-old Anna Fisher wants to escape the so-called simple life of the Amish--which for her consists of caring for younger children, sewing, cooking, and gardening--and she's well aware that her future will simply be more of the same with a man she doesn't love. Worlds collide when Madison and Anna meet for the first time in a small town, realize they look uncannily alike, and decide the grass is greener on the other side. Neither of them will ever be the same. If you enjoyed hearing the story of the country mouse and the city mouse as a child, or you enjoyed watching the Parent Trap movies where separated twin sisters meet at summer camp and trade places, then Double Take will be very enjoyable to you! I recommend putting this on your "just for fun" summer book list. It was light, entertaining, and also had a few heartfelt messages woven in for those who may be feeling disenchanted with their lives right now. Double Take is recommended for ages 12 and up. My 13-year-old daughter and I really liked this book for its adventure, mild suspense (oooh, will anyone discover that we've switched places???!!!), and gentle romance. You may read an excerpt of the book here, if you'd like! Double Take is available June 2011 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group. Disclaimer: I received a copy of Double Take from Revell Publishers for the purpose of providing you with an honest review of this book. No other compensation was provided. So...let's get honest here. When you hear or read the true biblical account of Lazarus, Martha, and Mary, which character are YOU? I've always enjoyed reading the true biblical accounts of real people in the Bible, who were a part of their culture and interacted with Jesus or other believers. And, this is probably no surprise to those of you who know me well . . . I'm a MARTHA. I used to think that this is a bad thing, but as I've matured, I've learned that Mary, Lazarus, and Martha all had unique challenges in their lives. They all had weaknesses. They all had failures. And they all learned to rely on Jesus for guidance through their challenges. Diana Wallis Taylor writes in an easy-to-read style that transports you back to the time in history which she is retelling. She is an award-winning Christian author and speaker. Diana has written about the woman of Samaria at the well, as well as a book of poems. She is a songwriter and also writes for various books and magazines. Her first book, Journey to the Well, came out in March 2009. After reading Martha, I'd like to also read Journey to the Well. What did I think about the new book, Martha? Wonderful! I enjoyed the variety of situations found in this family: quick proposals of marriage, broken hearts, the way the culture dictated so much of how they lived back then, a life turned into a ministry, and seeking after Jesus with a whole heart. Martha clearly shows all readers that God can use anyone for His glory! And that's always a great message to hear! After a busy school year, it was fun to sit down with an easy read that was still a historical fiction novel. Whenever I read about Mary, Martha, and Lazarus in the future, I will always think of this book. I enjoyed it thoroughly! I recommend this one! If you'd like to read an excerpt of this book, you may do so HERE. **Martha is available June 2011, at your favorite bookseller; it is published by Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.
