How to Have a H.E.A.R.T For Your Kids, by Apologia

How to Have a H.E.A.R.T For Your Kids,
by Rachael Carman

otherwise known by its NEW title:

How to Love a Non-Fiction Book When You Don't Usually Care for Non-Fiction!

Okay, I'll admit it - I added that NEW title to this book.
It deserves it!

How to Have a H.E.A.R.T. for Your Kids

H ~ Have a heart for the things of God

  E ~ Enrich your marriage

  A ~ Accept your kids

R ~ Release them to God

T ~ Teach them the truth

I'm not a huge non-fiction book reader, unless it's curriculum, but this book had me nodding my head like I was one of those "bobblehead" toys!

Picture
Rachael Carman didn't intend to become a homeschooling parent, but the Lord clearly rearranged her circumstances - and her heart - to help her see that educating her children at home was the best option for her own family.

As I read the Introduction, I thought Mrs. Carman had stolen my story, although I didn't desire to be a full-time career woman like she had desired to be.  But so much else in her story - especially her emotions and thoughts - mimicked what I was feeling before we decided to begin homeschooling our daughters.

Did I mention that I really don't prefer to read non-fiction books?

     Well, this book was DIFFERENT.

     I loved it!

There were so many sections in How to Have a H.E.A.R.T For Your Kids that brought smiles to my face.  I found myself jotting down page numbers that I wanted to go back and view again later on.

Picture

H ~ Have a heart for the things of God

I want to have a heart for God, so my children will see my love for Jesus.  This summer, I began spending more time in private worship, study, and prayer so I could grow further in my faith and my commitment to Christ.  While we have always had family worship time together in the evenings, and I pray off and on throughout the day, this book has challenged me to get back into a private time of reading the Bible alone.  The girls notice when I do this.  In turn, this is helping me question my motives with what I'm saying, writing, and doing.  This is the Holy Spirit at work within me!  I love this growing season of my life!

Picture

  E ~ Enrich your marriage

It's not easy being a home educator, mom, sister, daughter, friend, and wife.  And as any homeschool mom knows, often "wife" ends up at the end of the list.  We're overwhelmed with lengthy "to do" lists that cause our minds to flee from the thoughts of loving our husbands well, of giving them our full attention, of having an attitude of joy when we see our husband walk through the front door each evening.

Mrs. Carmen rightfully encourages us to consider our actions even when we think our husbands don't notice.  A little giggle when we see them goof up; the rolling of the eyes when we think their opinions are not as wise as our own; an unspoken grumble when we don't like their choices or what they're saying to us.  The griping about tiny, little habits our husbands have that really don't matter in the big scheme of life.  This is a convicting chapter, one that I'll regularly go back and reread and meditate upon.  While my husband and I aren't usually able to get away for a weekend, and we've never gone on fancy vacations together, when I show him the respect that he deserves, and he knows that I love him unconditionally despite his flaws, our marriage will be stronger.  If you think that marriages these days need lots of money and expensive trips to keep the marriage strong, then that would indicate that most marriages from the time of Adam and Eve until about 40 years ago must have been terrible!  And even today, most people throughout the world never even leave their village, and yet many have strong marriages.  There are some helpful tips in this chapter that can benefit every marriage!

Picture

      A ~ Accept your kids

American society loves children...until they're no longer "cute".  Then, they're considered a burden, a pain in the neck, teenagers.  I love  being around my girls.  I love shopping with them, going on trips with them, and I can't wait until they're old enough to attend adult women's retreats with me or book clubs for women.  They are answers to our prayers.

This chapter was amazing.  If you are finding yourself completely frustrated with your own children, you have GOT TO READ this chapter!  Jochebed (in the Old Testament) prayed for a deliverer for the Hebrew people, and her son (Moses) was the deliverer!  This chapter was very convicting to me.  Even though I love being in relationship with my daughters as they are maturing, I know we will have some harder times ahead.  That's just life!  Here's a fabulous quote by Mrs. Carmen that I love:

"It's possible that the answers to some of these prayers [godly government leadership, cures for cancer, missionaries to spread the Gospel, biblical themes in the movie industry, fashions to become more modest] are already here in the form of a child, a teenager, or a young adult.  Are the answers to these prayers growing up under your roof?  Which answer to prayer did you eat breakfast with this morning?  With which answer did you worship God on Sunday?  To which answer did you teach a new math concept today?  Perhaps the answer to your prayers is just learning to sit up or use a cup?  Did your "answer" skin a knee yesterday?  Lose a tooth?  Break an arm?"

Wow.  That sure makes ME think...and treat my children in a more respectful manner.

Picture
R ~ Release them to God

When our girls were each born, we knew that they were being loaned to us by God for a short time.  And of course, that time is going fast!  We call them "ours," but they're not.  They belong to God, whether they recognize that or not.  Regularly, I mentally release them to God.  Their desires and dreams, their strengths and weaknesses, all that they will ever become, is up to them and God.  I actually have very little to do with their adult lives and years to come.  I can only help in the molding and shaping process while they're here with us at home.  It won't be easy to watch them fly out of the nest, but I have no choice but to trust God for His long-term plan for their lives.  It is ALL about trusting God.

Picture

T ~ Teach them the truth.

My husband and I have been very motivated since our girls were quite young to make sure they knew the Truth of the Gospel, the words of Jesus Christ, from the Holy Scriptures.

One of our key motivations in educating them at home is so that they will have their minds and hearts filled with the truth, so they may combat the lies and deceit that exist in our world.  Bank tellers handle real money while being trained to do their jobs, and this allows them to spot the counterfeit immediately when it crosses their hands.  We're able to present the lies and the truths of the world in context with the Bible because we are choosing truthful curriculum that allows us to discuss all kinds of lies that our world believes.

Mrs. Carmen's example for explaining truth is terrific!  I won't give it away here, but you may read it on pages 159-160 in her book!

While I do really enjoy reading, I can't say that every book I share here with you is a "must read."  How to Have a H.E.A.R.T For Your Kids is a "must read," whether or not you educate your children at home.  I'd love to share more with you about this book, but you will have to just read it for yourself!

How to Have a H.E.A.R.T. For Your Kids is also in a nice, little hardback format that easily fits into a purse or backpack when you're out and about, making it very easy to read "on the go."  If you're already familiar with Apologia science texts, this book has been bound in the same or similar way.  It's a high quality book that I know you will enjoy!

I'm giving away a free, brand new copy of The GraceCard, compliments of the movie's promoter!  Read below to learn how you can sign up to win this movie!

Powerful, powerful, powerful.

If I could only use three words to describe the new movie, "The GraceCard", those are the words I would use.  If I was allowed a few more words, they would be:

     Cops, criminals . . . racism, acceptance . . . hate, love . . . bitterness, forgiveness.

The GraceCard just about covers it all.  Families breaking up; people bringing families back together.  Teenage rebellion; family renewal.  Pastors; more cops; and the best message of all:  forgiveness and grace from God that is shared with others in your life, whether you love 'em or can't stand 'em.
Picture
For those of us ages 13 and older in our family, we LOVED this movie!  It is rated PG-13 for some violence and thematic elements, but it was very appropriate for our family even though we are cautious about the movies we watch.  This will be a movie we will watch again and learn from again.  The poignant messages in The GraceCard are relevant to every human being on the planet.  We were all deeply touched by the messages in The GraceCard.

Now that you know what we thought of the movie's theme, what about the acting, choreography, etc.?  Well, the acting, for the most part, was fine.  There were a couple of slower scenes, but everything fit together well.

The GraceCard DVD released to the public on August 16, 2011, so you should be able to find it online and in your Christian bookstore.  I highly recommend this movie!

If you'd like to explore The GraceCard further, you can visit The GraceCard website and The GraceCard Facebook page.

Week of August 21 - 27, 2011

We're on the 1-week countdown before school begins in our area.  Are you ready?

When I come across back-to-school deals specifically for the Pacific Northwest, I'll share them here with you.  Keep in mind that I haven't been to each of these stores to confirm these prices, nor have I read through every ad.  Some stores may have different prices on some of their back-to-school items.  If you have any questions about the items on sale, or their prices, please contact that specific store or a sales clerk.

This week:  BiMart, Fred Meyer, Office Depot, Office Max, Staples, Target, Walgreens, WalMart, and Rite Aid!

Keeping Fresh Tomatoes from Going "Bad"

8/19/2011

Picture
Every day, I learn something new.  What's that saying?  The day you stop learning is the day you die?

Here's what I've learned today:  Storing tomatoes stem-side down can prolong their "shelf life."  Apparently, after the stem has been removed, the "scar" from that stem allows moisture from the tomato to escape, causing withering.  It also allows mold and bacteria into the tomato, which causes - you guessed it - mildew on the tomato.

Obviously, storing tomatoes stem-side down will only work if they are stored on a flat surface instead of actually like the photo of the cute basket, above.  And tomatoes retain the best flavor if they are left at room temperature instead of storing them in the refrigerator, where they all begin to taste, uh, rather tasteless.

Anyway, just a new tidbit of information that some of you may have not known, but would be helpful to you!  I'm going to start storing my tomatoes stem-side down on a plate or tray on the kitchen counter.

     EnJOY your tomatoes!

#1 Blog Post on JoyInOurJourney: Mock Starbucks Frappuccino recipe!

8/17/2011

Picture
Guess what?

Week after week, month after month, the most visited feature on Joy In Our Journey is my recipe for:

Mock Starbucks Frappuccinos!!!

When I first shared this recipe on January 7, 2011, it was the dead of winter.  Well, winters here are pretty mild, and this last winter was exceptionally mild, so it was probably still 50 degrees outside.

But when do most people want to buy a frappuccino?  Okay, well, some of you want to buy one every afternoon, around 2 p.m., when you're having a hard time keeping your eyelids open.

Really, though, a lot of us like these kinds of drinks in the summer, when it's HOT outside!

I only buy a frappuccino a few times each year, whether at Starbucks or Dutch Bros. or another similar place.  They can get expensive quickly, and I don't need those calories on a regular basis.  We've been buying raw milk this summer, which means I have cream on hand most of the time, so I think we'll try to start making a batch of this a couple of times each month.

Below is the recipe I've used in the past to make homemade frappuccinos, and these have been delicious.  Instead of using the blender this next time, though, I'm going to use our electric ice cream freezer.  We've got the kind that is electric but doesn't require the use of ice and salt.  Whew!  (Cuisinart 1.5 quart electric ice cream maker - $26).

Brittany wanted to make slushies the other day, so we followed the directions on our little ice cream maker (uh, plug in the ice cream maker and then pour in the beverage - I think we can handle those kinds of directions!), and 15 minutes later, we had slushies!  The ice crystals were very soft and nice, not hard and chunky.  The texture (do drinks even have texture???) was just like a 7-11 Slurpee.  Wow.  Sure beats the harder, chunkier texture of crushed ice in my blender, although my current blender does a pretty decent job crushing ice.

I think you will love this money-saving recipe!  You will find that by making this particular liquid "mix", you will spend the equivalent of ONE Starbucks frozen beverage in ingredients, but your "mix" will be able to make at least ten to twelve 8-10 oz. glasses of mocha frappuccinos.  That is a big money saver for those families and individuals who are trying to be more frugal with the frills of life.  If you're having a group of friends over and want to spoil them, this would be an inexpensive way to do it!

Face it, mocha frappuccinos are a "frill."  Not a necessity, although some people think so.
:)

Basically, there are two methods of making the mix.  Both versions seem to work equally well and will taste great.  Just use the version which you prefer.  You'll be storing the liquid "mix" in a sealed container, or pitcher, or zip-type bag in the refrigerator, and whenever you would like a mocha frappucinno, you can pour 8-10 oz. of the liquid mix into your blender (or electric ice cream maker) with an equivalent amount of ice, and you will have a freshly made frappuccino!

Mock Starbucks Frappuccino Recipe

  • 3 cups espresso coffee (or just strong coffee - the way my hubby drinks it!)
  • 3/4 cup sugar or evap. cane juice sugar or your own choice of sweetener
  • 4 cups milk (I used half cream, half milk, because then it doesn't separate after being blended - hint, hint!)
  • 3/4 cup chocolate syrup
  • *whipped cream for topping (if desired)
  • *chocolate for topping (if desired)
  • ice

Make strong coffee (espresso style), double or triple strength.  Chill in refrigerator overnight or until cold.  If your blender will handle the full recipe, add first 4 ingredients to blender and blend thoroughly.

My KitchenAid blender will handle 56 oz. of liquid, so this seems to work out well.  Otherwise, blend the ingredients in a large bowl and then pour half batches into the blender to mix well.  Or, simply make one half batch and combine it all in your blender.

This is your basic mix, and it should make at least ten 10-oz. mocha frappes.  Keep mix stored in the refrigerator, but only as long as you would safely store milk or cream.  When you are ready for a mocha frappe, combine 1 cup (8 oz.) mocha frappe mix (per person/serving) with 1 cup or so of ice (per person/serving), and blend well in blender.  Pour into glasses.  Top each glass with whipped cream and drizzle with chocolate syrup, if desired.  Serve.

Original recipe:  The original recipe said to blend the hot, fresh coffee and the sugar in your blender until the sugar has dissolved.  Add milk/cream and chocolate syrup and continue mixing, about one minute. Pour mix into a heatproof container to chill in refrigerator.  After chilling, store it in a sealable container in the fridge, but only as many days as you would normally store milk or cream.  To make the beverage, combine equal parts of mix and ice in a blender, and blend on high until smooth.  Pour into glasses; top each glass with whipped cream and drizzled chocolate syrup, if desired.  Serve.

Other options:  3 Tbsp. of cocoa powder dissolved into 1 Tbsp. of warm or hot water should be the equivalent of 1 Tbsp. chocolate syrup, as long as you add a bit of sweetener, too.  So, for the large batch of mocha frappe, you would combine 2-1/4 cups cocoa with 3/4 cup warm water; frankly, even though this would be lower fat, I think it would be more expensive.  That's a lot of cocoa powder!

Let me know in the comments section if you try the recipe - and what you think about it!

Also, if you have a question about the recipe, just let me know.  I'll do my best to answer you.

12-Step Program for Enabling a Berry Picker

12-Step program for enabling a berry picker

1. Never pick alone. If the urge strikes, call a friend.

2. Do not listen to negative talk about berry picking.

3. Remind others that berries are very high in antioxidants and you will be less likely to develop Alzheimer’s later in life and forget your own children, even if you do tend to forget about them now while you are picking.

4. Berry relief is very good for PMS (Permanent Mother Screaming). Who wants to run the risk of being trapped in a house for eight months with a woman who missed berry picking season?

5. Threaten to withhold any berries or products of to anyone who is negative or critical of your berry picking.

6. Always take just the right amount of buckets with you for the time you are allowed to pick. If you take 10 buckets, you will feel obligated to fill them all, and this is unfortunate if you have only a few hours.

Picture

7. Resist the temptation to stop “just to pick a few berries,” especially if you are on your way to an important event like the church potluck and you are bringing the main dish. Sure, a few berries would add just the right touch to your dish, but will the potluck wait until midnight?

8. If you confront a bear while picking berries, do not contest the bear but do stand your ground. That way, it will be easier for the searchers to find your remains after the bear eats you.

9. Never resort to buying store bought jams and jellies after your supply has run out.

10. Set a time limit for your berry picking. If there are a few berries, you will be there for a while. If there are a lot of berries, you will be there for quite a while.

11. Remember, berry picking is innate and very basic to a woman’s instincts. It goes clear back to the hunter-gatherer days.

12. Lastly, share your berry products with family members at Christmas. It makes a great gift and gives you a good excuse to pick next year.

Brittany's Chocolate Chip Cookies

8/8/2011

Picture
My Brittany loves to cook.  Food has always been a passion of hers - in several ways!

When Brittany was a toddler, we learned quickly not to tease her about taking away some of her food.  You know, those cute games parents and siblings play at the dinner table where when the child isn't looking or watching, someone else removes some of the food from her plate, or hides her plate, as a joke?

To Brittany, this wasn't a joke - it was ALL OUT WAR!  She would let us know, instantly, that this was NOT okay.  Screaming, tears, and a very upset child.  It wasn't worth ruining dinner to play with her in that way, although the rest of us have had some great laughs when doing this to each other.  (This is rare that we've done this to each other, though, so please don't send me hate mail!)

When she was about two years old, my parents bought her a toy kitchen.  Or maybe this came onto the scene when our oldest was two?  I don't remember.

Anyway, Brittany played and played and played with that toy kitchen and her pretend food and dishes, etc.  She played with that kitchen well beyond the years of when other children usually stop playing with a toy kitchen.
Picture
When she finally outgrew her toy kitchen, she began cooking and baking in our own kitchen, and she also began crafting miniature foods out of polymer clay.  She is SO creative!

This summer, she has been baking chocolate chip cookies to sell at her own lemonade stand.  Yum!

The girls also participated in a 4-H Communications club/project this spring and summer, so I was surprised at all when Brittany decided that her topic for her presentation at the county fair would be "How to Make the Best Chocolate Chip Cookies!"

Our delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe didn't begin with our family; we received it from a friend many years ago.  While we usually make a healthier version with whole wheat pastry flour, evaporated organic cane juice sugar, and pastured eggs, I will still admit that Brittany's recipe - even though it is unhealthy - tastes oh, so much better!

This recipe contains the same ingredients as the Nestle Toll House recipe, but the amounts are different...and it truly does make a difference.  Yum!

I thought you might enjoy seeing Brittany's chocolate chip cookie recipe for yourself...and give it a try if you'd like.  As long as the cookies aren't overbaked, these are delicious!  Just bake them until they are barely golden brown.  And I mean, barely.  Leave them on the pan for 5-10 minutes until you can safely remove them without them tearing into pieces.

Brittany is going to hand out recipe cards at the end of her presentation, so I thought you might enjoy these for yourself.  If you don't know anyone to give the extra copies to, that's okay.  It's the only way I could format this recipe for index card use...at least, the only way I could figure it out.

I loved playing Battleship as a child, and my girls have played it a few times because they were given this game by a friend or relative a few years ago.

If your children haven't ever played Battleship, or you will be traveling sometime in the near future and this might be fun to bring along, here are some free printable Battleship gameboards for your use!

No, I didn't develop these myself, but Cathe Holden from:

http://justsomethingimade.com
developed these game boards for her children's use.  I think they're so cute - and fun!  I think we'll place these in either page protectors or will place a sheet of acetate over them so they may be used over and over again with dry erase markers.

Just click on the two game board graphics to download them for your own personal use!
