“You were made for The River . . .”

Gabriel Clarke is mysteriously drawn to The River, a ribbon of frothy white water carving its way through steep canyons high in the Colorado Rockies. The rushing waters beckon him to experience freedom and adventure.

But something holds him back—the memory of the terrible event he witnessed on The River when he was just five years old—something no child should ever see.

Chains of fear and resentment imprison Gabriel, keeping him from discovering the treasures of The River. He remains trapped, afraid to take hold of the life awaiting him.

When he returns to The River after years away, his heart knows he is finally home. His destiny is within reach. Claiming that destiny will be the hardest—and bravest—thing he has ever done.

Gifted writer, performer, and masterful storyteller are all phrases used to describe Michael Neale.

With the highly anticipated September 2012 release of his first novel The River, as well as a second book, Your Great Name, which releases in October 2012, Michael is finding more and more ways to share his gift of storytelling as an author.

As a Dove Award-Winning songwriter, his songs have been recorded by artists such as Michael W. Smith (“Rise Above”), Natalie Grant (“Your Great Name,” Worship Song of the Year in 2012), Rebecca St. James (“In A Moment”), Todd Agnew (“I Need No Other”), and Phillips, Craig and Dean (“Saved the Day”), to name a few.

Michael divides his time among leading worship in churches, songwriting, and being a featured leader and teacher at conferences around the country. In between his travels, Michael serves on the team of Worship Leaders at Christ Fellowship Church in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, where he lives with his wife Leah, and their three children Micah, Maisie, and Wyatt.

Julieanne's thoughts of The River:

I thought The River was going to be more of a fictional work than it was.  It was actually a biography of a man, going back to the childhood trauma that scarred him and made him unable to enjoy life for so many years.

The River was a quick and easy read; it took me about 3 hours to finish reading it the other night.  While I enjoyed reading about this man's path through his own dry wilderness of childhood and young adulthood, and I became excited about some of the steps he took to trust in God and eventually find healing from his emotional pain, it wasn't the kind of book I'd choose to read a second time.

I love white-water rafting; haven't done it for many years, but I really enjoy getting out on a rushing river and feeling the thrill and excitement of the ride!  The River brought me back to those times I had experienced the churning of the water, so I enjoyed "reliving" the moment as I read through this book.

I wouldn't say that it is my all-time favorite book, however, but for those who have experienced very painful childhood memories, I think they will find some healing for themselves in The River.

Father of Lights DVD review and GIVEAWAY

11/5/2012

Sometimes, I feel like I need a little "shake up" in my faith in Christ, not so that my theology and love for God is changed in a negative way, but so that I take a closer look at God for who He is - and what this means for my own life.

Do you ever feel this way?  That you're finding yourself becoming too attached to who you are as a Christian, not wanting to step out in faith or do anything differently?

I was a bit reluctant to review this DVD, Father of Lights.

Why?  I guess it's because the spiritual use of the word "light" is so often misused within religious circles these days.  People think that because they "saw" a light while near death in surgery, they "saw" heaven.

Or people involved in the New Age religion use the word "light" a lot - but it has nothing to do with Jesus Christ.

Picture
Picture
This new DVD, Father of Lights, was something that I'm very thankful God allowed our family to see!  We watched it over two nights during our family Bible time.  Here's what my husband and I had decided before watching it:

If the movie was heretical, with its concepts against the Holy Scriptures, then we would use the viewing to stimulate godly discussion among our family about who God really is, and how this impacts our lives.  We would have talked about how portions of the movie - or specific phrases - were wrong and went against specific verses and passages in the Bible.

Thankfully, we didn't need to do that!

But Father of Lights definitely did provide plenty for us to discuss!  I truly loved seeing how the Holy Spirit is using such a wide variety of ways to share the gospel and God's love for people in this movie.  It is simply AMAZING!

If you love adoption and helping the helpless, you'll love watching this family, below, as they minister to "throwaway" children in an Asian society:

Picture
From the producer:

Father of Lights is the final film in the Finger of God/Furious Love trilogy. It is big, epic, and above all, challenging. If the producers were to have to explain what it is about in a nutshell, they would put it like this: if Finger of God is about God’s power, and Furious Love is about God’s love, then Father of Lights is about God’s heart.

"I went into making this film by asking the simple question: who is God? I wanted to know His character, His personality, and who He truly is. To answer this question, we had to peel back the many layers of religious garbage that has been passed onto Him through generations. That He is angry. Vengeful. Wrathful. And in general, that He doesn’t like you very much. The truth, as you will see vibrantly in this film, is that He is the most loving, compassionate, and wonderful Father you can imagine.

Along the way, we will look at a number of things. Aside from dealing with some of the misconceptions surrounding the Father, we’ll journey through the nature of grace, take on the 'religious spirit', and see some of the most amazing God encounters ever put on film. You’ll meet people who love more extravagantly than you thought possible, will watch God deal with witch doctors and gang leaders and Hindu holy men, and you’ll see an ending that…well…let’s just say you’ll need to see it to truly believe it."

Picture
This man, above, one of the spiritual leaders of his entire community, prayed to receive Christ after hearing about the gospel of Jesus Christ for the first time, ever.  This brought such tears to my eyes!

Picture
See this man, above, in the yellow shirt on the left?  You will be absolutely amazed at what God does in this circumstance.  I was stunned to see how the Lord works through Tim, on the right!

And then the scene where the top gang leader in a very large U.S. city turns his life over to Christ?  That was the cream of the crop for me!  Maybe this was because I read a Christian fiction book about a similar circumstance about two years ago, that I found very moving.  But in this case, this is not made up.  This is true.  The film makers risked their lives in order to meet with the gang leaders and try to resolve a dangerous situation.  It worked.  When they go back to visit the former gang leader several months later, you will not believe how the joy of Christ and new salvation just shines from his face!  He is a spiritually changed man.

Here's the movie trailer:

My final thoughts before doing the giveaway:  this is a powerful movie.  My children were exposed to some "new to them" methods of sharing Christ with others.  One of my daughters said that she felt uncomfortable in a couple of places in the movie, simply because she isn't used to seeing people healed by those who have the spiritual gift of healing.  I'm so thankful that we watched this and were able to see the incredible variety of ways that the Holy Spirit is ministering to others all around the world!

A Promise to Love:  Christian fiction by Serena B. Miller

A Promise to Love
by Serena B. Miller

Book Summary:

Ingrid Larsen, a young Swedish immigrant, arrives in Michigan in 1871 to search for her brother who has disappeared into the woods to work the dangerous lumber camps. Destitute and barely hanging on to hope, she encounters a newly-widowed farmer who is struggling to raise five children on his own. Marriage would solve both of their problems, and so Ingrid proposes to a man she barely knows. She will fight to protect her new family--but the hardest battle of all will be winning the heart of her new husband.

Picture
Serena Miller lives only a few miles from a flourishing Amish community and counts many Old Order Amish as friends. Love Finds You In Sugarcreek, Ohio is a natural outgrowth of her ongoing fascination with these valiant, flawed people who struggle to live their lives according to their interpretation of the Bible.

Her family, however, also lived for many years in Michigan. Serena's father, a sawyer, told her stories he had heard from old timber men who had cut the fabled giant pine in the Saginaw Valley. Visiting museums and reading about the years directly after the Civil War, when Michigan became the lumber capitol of the world, became a hobby. She used her research and writing to revisit that era by writing The Measure Of Katie Calloway, as well as her new book, A Promise to Love.

She is also the author of The Measure of Katie Calloway and Love Finds You in Sugarcreek, Ohio, as well as numerous articles for periodicals such as Woman's World, Guideposts, Reader's Digest, Focus on the Family, Christian Woman, and more. She lives on a farm in southern Ohio.

Julieanne's review and thoughts about A Promise to Love:

There have been quite a few books - and some movies - written over the years about marriages happening in emergency situations for convenience's sake.  Think Sarah, Plain and Tall, and you'll get the general jest of A Promise to Love.

I loved Sarah, Plain and Tall, and its sequels when I watched them.  I guess that's why I was excited to give this new book a try!  Like Sarah, Plain and Tall, there are some similar elements including anger, bitterness, unforgiveness.  A motherless family.  A grieving father.  And true stories of people's lives in times past woven in as key elements into the story.

But there are a few things about A Promise to Love that I enjoyed even more than I ever enjoyed Sarah, Plain and Tall!  (I didn't think I'd ever say that.)

The author, Serena Miller, writes a book whose words flow well, so that it is an easy read.  Not all authors write so that the words flow effortlessly for the reader.

The character's emotions are realistic and appropriate.  There are hints of romance throughout this story, but nothing more than a quick kiss or a gentle hug or a husband's arm wrapped around his wife's waist.  It's nice that my children can read this if they'd like, and I don't need to worry about the content.

My own great-grandfather, although not a logger or sawyer in Michigan, passed away from a logging accident many years ago in the Pacific Northwest.  I've heard a few stories about logging camps over the years, and have seen quite a few displays in museums here in the Pacific Northwest about logging in the 1800s and early- to mid-1950s.  It was a rough life, not easy for anyone in the family.  Since my husband is employed in the timber industry, I find true stories about its past quite interesting!

My favorite thing, though, about A Promise to Love is that the key character, Ingrid, a Swiss immigrant, uses her faith in Christ to strongly influence others around her who are hateful, unforgiving, or unrelentingly unkind.  And yet, again, it is realistic.  Women "under the influence" of the Holy Spirit's power can do great and mighty things with Christ's help.

Also, a very important message these days to share among wives and mothers, is the value of "keeping" a home and doing this for God's glory.  This message came out loud and clear in A Promise to Love, but in a soft and tender way.  I love it when authors acknowledge the importance of wives blessing their husbands and their children and serving their family with a joyful heart as much as is possible.

I appreciate the author's careful thoughts about motherhood and marriage spread throughout this book.  It isn't often that a person will read modern Christian fiction books that share this godly message of being the Proverbs 31 woman, and I respect Serena B. Miller's choice to include this in her new book, A Promise to Love
.

A Promise to Love is available October 2012 at your favorite bookseller - from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.
