The High Calling: Everyday Conversations about Work, Life, and God

Just what I need.

Another email.

Another newsletter.

Delete, delete, delete. 

    Ever been there?

    I know gals who don't even check their email anymore.  They receive so many emails per week that it makes them feel like they are going to drown from it all.  So they just practice avoidance - and I don't blame them at all.

    And not all of these emails, newsletters, and messages are bad.  Occasionally, they are downright inspiring. 

    But sometimes, in our overwhelming moments in life, we need to just hit [DELETE] and not feel guilty about it, right?

    There have even been bloggers and Christian ministries to which I've unsubscribed, just because I can't handle receiving so many emails - even if they are applicable to my life.

    Today, though, I've been introduced to a ministry whose goal is to create an online community by actively listening to and educating people about work, life, and God. The High Calling's motto is, “Every day conversations about work, life, and God.”

This looks like a weekly email I'll read and ponder before [deleting].

    I read through several of their weekly email newsletters and their accompanying articles and short audios and videos today.  While I can't say that I know everything there is to know about this Christian ministry, I was impressed with the professionalism and yet tender-hearted, life-touching ministry that The High Calling.org seems to have.

    The short vignettes and articles are quite poignant and take all but a minute or two to read. 

    That fits into my timeline - into my "Let's go check the email" part of the day.

    I read through articles about pondering the end stages of life and the struggles that caregivers and relatives go through as they care for the elderly.

    I viewed a short video by Scott Wesley called, "What Have Your Kids Taught You About God?"  Very touching and moving.

    And Matthew Dickerson's alternative view of what makes a person a good leader is something I wholeheartedly agree with and have rooted for in my own mind for years.

    These are very practical articles that basically bring our Christianity to our everyday thoughts and actions.  There are some very humbling thoughts in these messages. 

    And yet, I haven't read through the entire website.  So if I ever receive articles in my email that I believe are sacrilegious or not God-honoring, I'll let you know.

On their site, you’ll discover a broad range of articles, interviews, devotionals, and inspirational stories—all specifically created to help you find God in your work, family, and the broader culture. Their numerous writers and bloggers tell engaging stories crafted to encourage you in the high calling of your daily work.

    According to their website, The High Calling is also a safe place to ask difficult questions about work, leadership, culture, family, and faith. "Our community of Christ followers shares differing opinions about matters of faith and doubt.  We believe in the power of open dialog, and aim to be a safe place to raise difficult issues. We simply ask that each person be respectful of others, rooted and grounded in love."

    The High Calling.org has:

• Daily Reflections—a short Bible study every day by scholar and theologian Mark D. Roberts.
• Weekly Calling—summary of best content from the previous week
  
• Quarterly Sermon Notes—each quarter, a new set of three outlines that can be adapted for sermons or bible classes.

    Guests to The High Calling.org may sign up to receive their weekly or daily newsletters and articles.

    One of the items that caught my interest on The High Calling is their weekly Facebook photos that contain godly, biblical messages to share with others in a non-threatening manner.  I enjoy being able to share the simple truths of the Bible with others in ways like this, and these are purposefully designed to be shared with others:

    So far now, I'm going to look forward to receiving The High Calling's weekly messages in my email inbox. 

    And leaving a final thought with you, here's an article from The High Calling that resounds with me:  Ten Commandments of Talking Politics on Social Media. During political elections, yes, we should be active as Christians and vote as part of our citizenship in the United States, but we need to do this in a manner that shows our faith in Christ as well:
