    Thirty Days to Glory centers around Catherine Benson, who longs to do one great thing before she dies...and Elmer Grigsby, who hopes to stay seriously drunk until he slips out of the world unnoticed.

    Against a Christmas backdrop, Catherine searches for purpose while fighting the infirmities of age and the best intentions of her children. She gains support in the battle from her faithful housekeeper and her quirky friends known as the Glory Circle Sisters.

    Elmer isn’t supported by anyone, except maybe his cat. When he opens the last whiskey bottle of the month, he knows it is time to shuffle down to the post office and pick up his government check.

    Somewhere in his fog, Elmer knows he was once a better man. That is why he stays in the fog.

    When their destinies intersect one Tuesday in December, they both discover it is only Thirty Days to Glory.

Author Kathy Nickerson

    Author Kathy Nickerson writes from her home in rural Missouri, where she lives with her husband of nearly forty years. They are the parents of four children who grew up to become their best friends and who have given them a dozen grandchildren, so far. Kathy's eternal optimism comes from her mother, The Nicest Woman on Earth, and from a deep faith in the God who made Light to shine from darkness.

    An interesting story taking place in a small town in the month of December, this is a story of aging folks who are helpless to fight off the battle of age-related issues (pain, forgetfulness, reliance on other—younger—folks around them). 

    It is a tough time, and the story is realistically told. 


    There are really only two main characters: 

•  Catherine Benson, a widow still living in the same house in which she spent most of her married years and those since and has no intention of ever leaving
• Elmer Grigsby, an elderly veteran living on his own almost in a homeless condition and attempting to drink himself to death.

    The other characters in the story are very much a part of the life, especially of Catherine, and are extremely supportive and helpful to her, but she is still a completely independent and strong elderly woman. 

    The vulnerability of these two people is very real, especially to a reader who is also approaching “elderly” status, and the novel is written in such a way as to make one realize that many decisions must be made and expressed to loved ones before the end of life. 

    There are some great surprises in this story as well as sweet moments of interaction between the various characters.  Thirty Days to Glory is a great novel with many thoughts to contemplate.
